Why Visit Akrotiri?
Located in the south of Santorini, Akrotiri is one of the most significant prehistoric settlements in Europe, known as the "Minoan Pompeii." The city was preserved under ash after the volcanic eruption around 1600 B.C., and was discovered in 1866. Excavations began in 1967, revealing a range of findings, including decorative elements, tools, and multi-storied buildings. The site also features Minoan sanctuaries and elaborate frescoes.
