Tour of Communist Tirana
On this tour, we'll explore the history of Tirana, focusing on the communist era. The meeting point is at 9 am at the entrance of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Albania.
The tour covers the People's Socialist Republic of Albania, which lasted from 1946 to 1992, beginning with a visit to Scanderbeg Square to view the national hero's statue. We will proceed to the House Studio Kadare, the home of Ismail Kadare, a prominent Albanian writer who faced significant challenges during the communist regime.
Next, we will visit Bunk'Art 2, a large nuclear shelter now serving as a history museum, featuring 36 rooms established between 1981 and 1986. The tour continues past the government buildings and along the main boulevard until we reach the Pyramid of Tirana, where we will stop for coffee at Komiteti - Kafe Muzeum.
Another highlight is the Post-Block Memorial, an original section of the Berlin Wall. We will conclude our tour in the former Blloku area, known for its stories from the communist era. Finally, we will visit the Museum of Secret Surveillance, which has served various functions throughout its history, including a gynecology clinic and use by the Gestapo during the German occupation.
The tour concludes at the museum exit around 1 pm.
