Tour of Communist Tirana

On this tour of communist Tirana, we'll travel back in time to learn about the history of the capital of Albania while visiting the Bunk'Art 2, the Secret Surveillance Museum and the house-museum of Ismail Kadare.

Tour of Communist Tirana

At 9 am we'll meet at the entrance of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Albania in the center of Tirana. We will start a tour that follows the traces of communism in Albania.

During this tour, we'll learn about the history of the People's Socialist Republic of Albania, which existed from 1946 to 1992, and we'll visit Scanderbeg Square to see the statue of the national hero.

We will visit the House Studio Kadare, home of writer Ismail Kadare, to learn about his work during the communist era and the challenges he faced.

Next, we'll stop at Bunk'Art 2, a former nuclear shelter transformed into a history museum, featuring 36 rooms built between 1981 and 1986 for protection against invasions or nuclear attacks.

We'll pass by government buildings and walk along the main boulevard to the Pyramid of Tirana. A coffee break will be held at Komiteti - Kafe Muzeum.

We will see the Post-Block Memorial, an original section of the Berlin Wall, and visit the former Blloku area, known for its unique stories from the communist era.

Finally, we'll enter the Museum of Secret Surveillance, used for various purposes, including as one of Albania's first gynecology clinics and by the Gestapo during the German occupation.

We'll conclude the tour at the museum exit around 1 pm.
