El Brujo Day Trip
At 10:20 am, we'll meet on Jirón Obregoso Street and set off for El Brujo and its antechamber Magdalena de Cao, located 37 miles (60 kilometers) north of Trujillo.
Upon arrival at this small village, which dates back to the Chimú culture, our guide will inform us about the history of the Lady of Cao. The discovery of her remains established that women held significant positions in this civilization, countering claims that only men ruled in ancient Peru.
In Magdalena de Cao, we will see the monument to the Lady of Cao and explore traditional handicraft and pottery shops. We will also taste chicha de añejo, a typical Inca drink made from corn.
Next, we will visit the El Brujo Archaeological Site where the Lady of Cao was discovered. This site is significant due to its history of 6 different civilizations.
We will tour its ceremonial sites, including tables used by shamans and the Huaca Cao, a pyramid that housed the ruler's tomb.
Lastly, we will visit the museum that holds the mummified Lady of Cao, showcasing jewellery found in her tomb, including semi-precious stones and gold and silver beads. After our visit, lunch will be at a local restaurant before returning to Trujillo, with drop-off at the Plaza de Armas at 4 pm.
