Unveil the story behind the Lady of Cao, a religious leader who ruled Peru over 2,000 years ago on our El Brujo Day Trip. Discover the role of women in the pre-Columbian era and see where she exercised her power.
El Brujo Day Trip
At 10:20 am, we meet on Jirón Obregoso Street and depart for El Brujo and its antechamber Magdalena de Cao, located 37 miles (60 kilometers) north of Trujillo.
Upon arrival at this village, which dates back to the Chimú culture, our guide will provide insight into the history of the Lady of Cao. The discovery of her remains demonstrated that women held high positions within this civilization.
In Magdalena de Cao, we will see the monument to the Lady of Cao and visit local handicraft and pottery shops. We will also taste the chicha de añejo, a traditional Inca beverage made from corn.
Next, we will visit the El Brujo Archaeological Site, significant for housing remains from 6 different civilizations. We will tour its ceremonial sites, including the tables used by shamans and the Huaca Cao, the pyramid that held the region's ruler's tomb.
We will then visit the museum containing the mummified Lady of Cao and jewelry from her tomb, including semi-precious stones and gold and silver beads.
A local restaurant stop for lunch will follow this visit. We will return to Trujillo, arriving at the Plaza de Armas by 4 pm.
