Did you know that Tunisia is home to one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the world? Discover it on this guided tour of the fascinating historic towns of Monastir and El Jem.

Monastir & El Jem Tour Itinerary

At 8 am, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Tunis for a three-hour drive to El Jem, home to some of the most impressive Roman remains in Africa.

Upon arrival, the first site will be the Amphitheatre of El Jem, one of the best-preserved Roman ruins in the world and the third largest amphitheatre after the Coliseum in Rome and the Verona Arena, with a capacity of over thirty thousand people. Next, you'll explore additional archaeological sites in El Djem to learn about the town's history and its origins as a Carthaginian settlement. A typical lunch will be served around 1 pm, followed by a journey to Monastir, just over an hour away.

In Monastir, the tour will begin at the Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the final resting place of the first President of Tunisia. The tour continues with a visit to the Ribat of Monastir, a historic fortress from the 8th century, offering views of the Mediterranean and insights into sea control. The Ribat has also been a filming location for various movies.

After the Monastir tour, you'll return to Tunisia, concluding the tour around 4 pm.
