A Historical Icon of Piedmonte

Located in the Susa Valley, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Turin, is a Benedictine abbey dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, constructed between AD 983 and 987. After being inhabited by monks for 600 years and following a brief abandonment, the abbey is now managed by the Rosminian Fathers. They conduct cultural and religious initiatives to enhance this important monument. In 1994, the Sacra di San Michele was designated as a Symbolic Monument of Piedmonte.

What to See in the Sacra di San Michele?

Entrance and Statue of Saint Michael: the entrance features a 5.5-meter (18-foot) statue of Saint Michael, depicting his battle against the devil.Scalone dei Morti: a steep staircase of 243 steps dating from the 12th century, named for the noble figures buried in its atrium. The Portal of the Zodiac: a remarkable Romanesque work showcasing zodiac signs, noted as the oldest Romanesque cycle of its kind. The Church: a Romanesque-Gothic church renowned for its interior frescoes, including the Great Fresco of the Assumption from 1505.The Bell'Alda Tower: a 12th-century tower tied to a legend of a girl saved from falling by angels.

The Name of the Rose

The character Adso of Melk describes the abbey as a tower reaching the sky. Umberto Eco expressed an interest in adapting his novel in this location but could not due to practical challenges. The abbey likely served as inspiration during Eco's university years in Turin.
