On this day trip to the Sacra di San Michele from Turin, we will explore locations that inspired Umberto Eco's novel The Name of the Rose, featuring stunning views of the valley and Alps.

A Historical Icon of Piedmonte

Located in the Susa Valley, approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Turin, the Benedictine abbey is among the oldest temples dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, with origins dating back to between AD 983 and 987. After being inhabited by monks for nearly 600 years and a subsequent two years of abandonment, it is now managed by the Rosminian Fathers, who conduct cultural and religious initiatives to promote this historic monument. In 1994, the Sacra di San Michele was designated a Symbolic Monument of Piedmonte.

What to See in the Sacra di San Michele?

Entrance and Statue of Saint Michael: features a 5.5 metre (18 feet) tall statue of Saint Michael.Scalone dei Morti: a steep staircase of 243 steps from the 12th century, known for being the burial site of notable figures. The Portal of the Zodiac: a dramatic Romanesque work depicting zodiac signs, considered the oldest Romanesque zodiac cycle. The Church: notable for its paintings, including the Great Fresco of the Assumption (1505).The Bell'Alda Tower: a 12th-century tower linked to a legend about a girl saved by angels.

The Name of the Rose

Character Adso of Melk reflects on the abbey's striking appearance in a scene. Umberto Eco intended to film the adaptation on-site but faced location constraints. His connection to the abbey likely influenced his writing.
