The history of the Venice Carnival transcends its colorful masks. This walking tour focuses on the medieval origins of this renowned festival.

Description

Experience the Venice Carnival through hidden identities and social codes celebrated along the canals. The event, held annually before Lent, has roots in pagan traditions. The tour begins at the church of San Simeon Piccolo, where we will explore its historical significance.

We will visit the sestieri of San Polo, Santa Croce, and Dorsoduro during this guided tour, transporting us back to the Middle Ages. In this era, the festival evolved and, by the 13th century, nobles began to don costumes to interact with commoners. As we wander through the narrow streets, we'll discuss events that contributed to the carnival's popularity.

By the 18th century, the Venice Carnival reached its peak. A visit to an atelier of masks and Carnival costumes will enhance our understanding of the history and the aristocrats who used disguises to enjoy the festivities anonymously, including the notable libertine Giacomo Casanova.

We will conclude the tour with anecdotes about Casanova and other figures in Venice's history.
