The history of the Venice Carnival goes beyond the colorful masks. Join this walking tour to learn about the medieval origins of this iconic festival.
Description
The Venice Carnival has its own social codes that make this celebration by the canals one of the most popular globally. This tour begins at the church of San Simeon Piccolo, where we will explore the fascinating history of the festival celebrated annually before Lent. We will visit the sestieri of San Polo, Santa Croce, and Dorsoduro, transporting us back to the Middle Ages. Here, the festival of pagan origin evolved, particularly in the 13th century when nobles began to dress in costume to mingle with commoners. As we walk through narrow streets, we will discuss significant events that contributed to the carnival's popularity through the ages.
By the 18th century, the Venice Carnival reached its peak. The tour includes a visit to an atelier of masks and Carnival costumes to learn about the history and the aristocrats who masked their identities to enjoy the festivities. Notably, Giacomo Casanova, known for his numerous love affairs, epitomized this hedonistic spirit of the carnival.
After sharing anecdotes and secrets about Casanova and other historical figures, the tour concludes in the historic center of Venice.
