The history of the Venice Carnival dates back to medieval times. This walking tour explores the medieval origins of this renowned festival.
Description
The Venice Carnival is characterized by colorful masks, allowing participants to observe while remaining unseen, creating an atmosphere of mystery and flirtation. This festival, celebrated annually before Lent, has fascinating historical roots that we will begin to explore in front of the church of San Simeon Piccolo.
During the tour, we will visit the sestieri of San Polo, Santa Croce, and Dorsoduro. These neighborhoods offer a glimpse into the Middle Ages, when the festival of pagan origin evolved, with the 13th century seeing the nobility dressing in costume to mix with commoners. The narrow streets along the canals will serve as our backdrop as we discuss the events that contributed to the celebration's lasting popularity.
By the 18th century, the Venice Carnival reached its peak. We will visit an atelier of masks and Carnival costumes to learn about the history and the nobility who concealed their identities during the festival. Notable figures, including the libertine Giacomo Casanova, played a significant role in the Carnival’s allure.
The tour concludes with anecdotes about Casanova and other notable characters in the historic center of Venice.
