Join us on an enriching excursion from Verín to the Portuguese town of Chaves and its surroundings. Experience the essence of this northern Portuguese town as you explore its notable monuments and intriguing history.
Chaves Day Trip
Your adventure begins with a convenient pick-up from your accommodation in Verín. A 4x4 vehicle or jeep will transport you across the border and within approximately 30 minutes, you will arrive at the scenic town of Chaves.
Upon arrival, we embark on a guided stroll through the town, taking in its most significant sights. We will start by observing the stunning façade of the medieval castle of Chaves, which boasts a well-preserved keep. This ancient fortress, dating back to pre-Roman times and later reinforced during the Muslim era, now serves as a military museum.
Next, our journey leads us to explore the exterior of the São Francisco and São Neutel forts, which were constructed as defensive structures in the 17th century. We will then proceed to the Roman bridge spanning the Tâmega River, built upon the orders of Trajan, the first emperor of the Hispano-Roman era. Here, we will also observe the commemorative column marking its construction at the close of the 1st century.
To conclude our exploration, we will visit the renowned Roman thermal baths in Chaves. Interestingly, these baths are known for having some of the warmest medicinal waters throughout Europe.
After a comprehensive tour lasting approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, we will make our way back to Verín, where you will be returned to your hotel.
