- 3 hours
Embark on a day excursion from Verín to discover the captivating Portuguese town of Chaves and its picturesque surroundings. This journey will immerse you in the rich heritage and notable monuments of a town located in northern Portugal.
Excursion to Chaves
At the designated departure time, a 4x4 vehicle or jeep will collect you from your hotel in Verín, and we will head across the border into Portugal, reaching the charming town of Chaves in just half an hour.
Upon arrival, we will stroll through the town, exploring its most symbolic sites. Our first stop will be the stunning façade of the medieval fortress of Chaves, which has preserved its historic keep. This castle, now home to a military museum, dates back to pre-Roman times, with its defenses strengthened during the era of Muslim rule.
Next, we will visit the exterior of the São Francisco and São Neutel forts, constructed in the 17th century as part of the town's defenses. From this vantage point, we will make our way to the impressive Roman bridge spanning the Tâmega River, commissioned by Trajan, the first Hispano-Roman emperor. You will also observe a commemorative column marking the completion of this structure at the close of the first century.
To conclude our journey, we will explore the Roman thermal baths in Chaves. These renowned baths boast some of the warmest medicinal waters in Europe.
After a thorough exploration lasting approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, we will return to Verín and drop you off at your hotel.
