Travel through the history of S?o Miguel Island on this colonisers' tour of Vila Franca do Campo. Discover its main monuments as we explore the prosperous past of the Portuguese Empire.
Description
Join us to travel through the history of the Azores. We will meet at the Vila Franca do Campo Marina at the scheduled time to begin this tour dedicated to the colonisers.
Our first stop is the Ethnography Museum, showcasing pieces from various archaeological digs on São Miguel and providing insight into the oldest traditions on this island.
Next, we will visit the old town of Vila Franca do Campo to see significant monuments, including the São Miguel Arcanjo Church, São Lázaro Church, the António da Silva Cabral Garden, and the site commemorating the D. António Prior do Crato Naval Battle.
During the tour, we will discuss the colonisers' notable achievements, reflecting on the rise of the Portuguese Empire in the Atlantic. We will proceed to the Nossa Senhora da Paz hermitage, located at the highest point in Vila Franca do Campo, offering panoramic views.
Our next destination is a pineapple farm to learn about the significance of this crop from the late 19th century to the present.
We will conclude the tour by tasting the delicious Queijadas da Vila, a typical sweet on São Miguel produced in Vila Franca do Campo. The tour lasts approximately 3 hours before returning to the starting point.
