Travel through the history of S?o Miguel Island on this colonisers' tour of Vila Franca do Campo. Discover its main monuments and the prosperous past of the Portuguese Empire.
Description
Join us to travel through the history of the Azores. The strategic importance of these Portuguese Islands is significant. At the scheduled time, we'll meet at the Vila Franca do Campo Marina to start this tour dedicated to the colonisers.
The tour begins at the Ethnography Museum, showcasing pieces from various archaeological digs on São Miguel. This is an ideal location to learn about the oldest traditions on this island.
Next, we will visit Vila Franca do Campo's old town to see major monuments, including the São Miguel Arcanjo Church, the São Lázaro Church, the António da Silva Cabral Garden, and the site commemorating the D. António Prior do Crato Naval Battle.
Through this journey, we will explore the memorable feats of the colonisers linked to the rise of the Portuguese Empire in the Atlantic. Our next destination is the Nossa Senhora da Paz hermitage, known for its splendid panoramic views.
We will then visit a pineapple farm to understand the product's significance since the end of the 19th century. The tour includes a tasting of Queijadas da Vila, a typical sweet from São Miguel. After 3 hours, we will conclude the tour back at the starting point.
