On this boat trip along the coast of São Miguel, you'll admire whales and dolphins that inhabit the Azorean waters and sail near the islet of Vila Franca do Campo.
Whale Watching + Vila Islet Boat Tour
At the agreed time, we will meet at the port of Vila Franca do Campo, located south of São Miguel Island. The tour begins with a brief theoretical introduction to local wildlife, followed by safety guidelines for high seas. We will then board a zodiac boat to spot whales and dolphins.
The Azorean archipelago is home to diverse marine wildlife, including blue and humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins, along with a large colony of sperm whales and pilot whales.
Accompanied by a naturalist guide specializing in Azorean wildlife, participants will learn to distinguish between species based on characteristics such as tail size and skin color.
After the whale watching experience, we will sail next to the islet of Vila Franca do Campo, admiring its caldera. If conditions allow, we may also see various seabirds like Cory's shearwater and the black-footed tern.
Finally, after three hours of sailing in the Atlantic, we will return to the departure dock.
Whale Watching
The coast of São Miguel Island is an excellent location for observing whales, dolphins, and other cetaceans. However, sightings can be unpredictable, influenced by factors such as weather conditions and the breeding seasons of species.
