Whaling Heritage Azores Tour

Meet us at the Vila Franca do Campo Marina to start the tour focused on the history of whaling in the Azores, examining its cultural significance and conservation efforts.

The journey begins with a visit to the Senhora de Fátima, a whaling ship from 1945, the only operational vessel from that era in the Azores. We will discuss intriguing facts about whaling and local culture.

Afterwards, we’ll board a minibus to the whaling lookout, Vigia da Furada. Here, participants will learn about ancient whale-watching techniques that have positioned the Azores as a global reference.

From this lookout, we will use specialized binoculars to potentially spot whales, gaining insight into the lookout's vital role and understanding the various mammal species spotted in the region. This activity enhances our connection to the whaling heritage.

We will conclude our tour with a visit to the Ponta Garça Lighthouse, established in 1957, known for its historical significance and stunning views.

This 3-hour tour will deepen your understanding of the rich history of Azorean whaling as we return to our starting point.
