Whaling Heritage Azores Tour
Meet us at the Vila Franca do Campo Marina to commence our tour focused on the history of whaling in the Azores. We will explore the evolution of this tradition and its connection to marine conservation.
The journey begins with a visit to the Senhora de Fátima, a whaling ship from 1945, which is the only operational and seaworthy vessel from that period in the Azores. Here, we will uncover intriguing facts about local whaling culture.
Next, we will board a minibus to the whaling lookout, Vigia da Furada, where we will learn about ancient whale-watching techniques that have made the Azores a significant site in this field.
From the lookout, we will use specialized binoculars to observe marine mammals, enhancing our understanding of the lookout's role in monitoring and the species that can be seen from this location.
To conclude our tour, we will visit the Ponta Garça Lighthouse, established in 1957, which holds fascinating stories. Participants will also enjoy the scenic views from this landmark.
This 3-hour tour concludes as we return to our starting point, having gained insights into the Azorean whaling heritage.
