Whaling Heritage Azores Tour
Meet us at the Vila Franca do Campo Marina to start our tour focused on the history of whaling in the Azores. We will delve into the evolution of this historical tradition and the local marine life.
The journey begins with the Senhora de Fátima, an authentic whaling ship from 1945, the sole fully operational and seaworthy witness of that era. We will explore intriguing facts about whaling and local whaling culture.
Next, we will board a minibus to the whaling lookout, Vigia da Furada, where we will learn about ancient whale-watching techniques that established the Azores as a global reference in this field.
At the lookout point, we will use specialized binoculars to observe marine mammals. This experience will enhance our understanding of the lookout's crucial role in whale spotting and the various species seen from this vantage point.
To conclude our exploration, we will visit the Ponta Garça Lighthouse, built in 1957, and enjoy the scenic views it offers. Our 3-hour tour will conclude as we return to our starting point, enriched by the deep history of Azorean whaling heritage.
