Walking Tour of Vila Viçosa
We will meet at the scheduled time on Avenida Duques de Bragança to begin our guided walking tour. Our route starts at the Pelourinho, a marble pillar marking the entrance of the Castle of Vila Viçosa. We will explore significant monuments, including historic ramparts, the Church of Our Lady of the Conception, and ancient Roman archaeological finds.
We will visit the tomb of writer and poet Florbela Espanca, a pioneer of the feminist movement in Portugal, and learn about notable local figures such as mathematician Bento Jesus Caraça and painter Henrique Pousão.
Our 2.5-hour walking tour continues with the Church of St John the Evangelist and the Convent of Chagas de Cristo. The next stop is the Ducal Palace, where we will explore its museum and library, discussing the history of this building, which served as the residence of the last royal Portuguese dynasty, the Dukes of Bragança.
Finally, we will explore the exterior of the Igreja dos Agostinhos church before returning to the meeting point on Avenida Duques de Bragança.
