Walking Tour of Vila Viçosa
Our excursion will commence at a designated time on Avenida Duques de Bragança. Are you prepared to explore the key highlights of Vila Viçosa?
We will initiate our journey at the Pelourinho, a striking marble column that denotes the entrance to the Castle of Vila Viçosa. Following this, we'll delve into significant landmarks that define this captivating region. You will have the chance to appreciate the historic city walls, the sanctuary dedicated to Portugal's patron saint, the Church of Our Lady of the Conception, and the ancient Roman artifacts unearthed in this area.
Next, we will proceed to the resting place of the renowned writer and poet Florbela Espanca, a pioneer of the feminist movement in Portugal. We’ll also touch upon the lives of other notable local figures, including the mathematician Bento Jesus Caraça and the artist Henrique Pousão.
Continuing our 2.5-hour exploration, we will visit the Church of St John the Evangelist and the Convent of Chagas de Cristo. Our subsequent stop will be the Ducal Palace. Here, we will navigate through its museum and library while sharing the rich heritage of this monumental site, which served as the residence for the Dukes of Bragança, the last royal family of Portugal.
In the concluding segment of our tour, we will admire the exterior of the Igreja dos Agostinhos before retracing our steps back to our initial meeting place on Avenida Duques de Bragança.
