Bird Watching in the Mahaica River
At 4:30 am, we will pick you up at your hotel in Georgetown. We will set off along the Demerara coast until we reach the Mahaica River, one of the longest rivers in Guyana.
After an hour-long drive, we will board a boat and cruise upstream in search of the many birds living in this ecosystem, with a focus on the Hoatzin.
During the boat ride, we will learn about what makes the Hoatzin unique, including its intestinal structure and its connection to the Archaeopteryx. We will also likely spot other species like the blood-colored woodpecker, white-bellied grosbeak, crab hawk, green-tailed jacamar, and little Cuckoo. Additionally, we may see otters and monkeys along the river.
Throughout the tour, we will explore the unique flora and vegetation along the river. Afterward, we will return to the mainland to enjoy a local breakfast in a nearby restaurant.
At 9:30 am, we will start our return to your hotel in Georgetown, concluding the tour at approximately 10:30 am.
