Private Tour of Surakarta and Hindu Temples
Upon your hotel pickup, you will embark on a journey to Surakarta, approximately a two-hour drive from Yogyakarta. Your first destination will be the Radya Pustaka Museum, regarded as one of the most significant cultural hubs and is the second oldest museum in Indonesia. Within its walls, you will find a remarkable array of 'Wayang' puppets utilized in the traditional Indonesian shadow puppet theater, as well as various local handicrafts, which are a hallmark of this vibrant area. One of your next stops will be at a local market: the city of Solo, famed for its exquisite Batik textiles, offers an excellent shopping opportunity.
Next, visit the nearby Mangkunegaran Palace, a highlight of Surakarta's architecture and a beautifully preserved example of royal heritage. Constructed in 1757, this palace remains the residence of Java’s royal family descendants.
After some free time for lunch, your afternoon will be dedicated to exploring two intriguing temples. The first is Candi Cetho, a Javanese-Hindu temple complex dating back to the 15th century, located on the slopes of Mount Lawu, nearly 5000 feet (1500 m) above sea level. Your next destination will be Sukuh Temple, built around the same time and renowned for its distinctive erotic reliefs, statues, and symbols associated with fertility.
After a day rich in culture and history, you will be returned to Yogyakarta.
