Embark on a remarkable hiking journey through the Calcarazzi Mountains, where dramatic volcanic scenery of Mount Etna and the stunning Sicilian coastline await. This is an adventure that promises to be unforgettable!
Hiking Overview
We will convene at the designated Schiena dell'Asino parking area at the scheduled time to commence our expedition through the captivating Calcarazzi Mountains, celebrated for their natural beauty surrounding Mount Etna.
Our 7.5-kilometre (4.6-mile) trek will take us around the Bove Valley as we approach the intriguing craters within the Calcarazzi range. Interestingly, these volcanic cones emerged following the 1991 volcanic eruption, which was among the most significant eruptions witnessed in Sicily throughout the 20th century.
As we set off under the shade provided by tall pine trees, we will navigate through winding paths that will unveil breathtaking views of Sicily's southeastern coastline. It’s the perfect moment for memorable photographs!
Upon reaching the summit of the Schiena dell'Asino path, we will enjoy a panoramic view of the expansive Bove Valley, characterized by its impressive 8-kilometre (5-mile) geological depression adorned with volcanic sand, giving the area its unique lunar-like appearance. Prepare to feel transported to another realm!
After soaking in these stunning vistas, with the craters of Mount Etna sprawled out before us, we will ascend to an elevation of 2245 metres (7365 feet). We will then venture inland, bidding farewell to Bove Valley, and redirecting our path towards the Calcarazzi Mountains.
Continuing forward, we will arrive at the Silvestre Superiore crater, where another breathtaking landscape will unfold. Our descent will lead us to the Sapienza refuge as we make our way back to the starting point, completing the hike in approximately 4-5 hours.
