Calcarazzi Mountains Hike

On this hike in the Calcarazzi Mountains, we will explore the volcanic landscapes of Mount Etna and the Sicilian coast.

Hike Details

We will meet at the Schiena dell'Asino parking to begin the hiking experience through the Calcarazzi Mountains. The 7.5-kilometre (4.6-mile) trek will circle the Bove Valley and reach the craters in the Calcarazzi Mountains, formed after the volcanic eruption in December 1991.

Initially, we will walk under pine trees and, after some curves, a view of Sicily's southeastern coastline will open up. We will reach the peak of the Schiena dell'Asino route, offering views of the Bove Valley, a geological depression of 8 kilometres (5 miles) made of volcanic sand.

From an altitude of 2245 metres (7365 feet), we will observe Mount Etna's craters, then head inland towards the Calcarazzi Mountains. We will visit the Silvestre Superiore crater for another scenic view before descending to the Sapienza refuge. The total duration of the hike is approximately 4-5 hours.
