Day Trip to Appenzell and Hoher Kasten

Let yourselves be captivated by rural Switzerland on this day trip to the village of Appenzell. We'll visit a traditional cheese factory and go up Hoher Kasten by cable car.

Day Trip Details

At the designated time, we'll set off from the Sihlquai Bus Station parking lot in Zurich towards the northeastern region of Switzerland.

During our bus ride, we'll drive along Lake Zurich and pass next to Rapperswil Castle. The journey will continue to the hills of Appenzell, where we'll visit a traditional farm to try a glass of fresh milk from its cows.

Our next stop will be the Appenzeller cheese factory, where we'll see how raw milk is turned into Switzerland's most aromatic cheese. We'll visit its warehouse, which holds up to 12,500 wheels of cheese, and partake in a cheese tasting.

After the cheese factory, we'll take the cable car up Hoher Kasten Mountain, whose summit is 1794 metres (5885 feet) above sea level. From the top, you'll have views of the Alpstein massif, Rhine Valley, Lake Constance, and the Principality of Liechtenstein, as well as glimpses of Germany and Austria. A revolving restaurant is available for lunch.

After lunch, we'll return to the base and proceed to the picturesque village of Appenzell for a guided tour of the houses' wooden facades and a visit to a chocolate boutique for a chocolate tasting.

After the tour, you'll have half an hour of free time in the village. We'll then journey back to Zurich, providing a bag of Swiss products during the return trip. This 11-hour day trip concludes with goodbyes at the starting point in Zurich.
