Day Trip to Appenzell and Hoher Kasten

Let yourselves be captivated by rural Switzerland on this day trip to the village of Appenzell. We'll visit a traditional cheese factory and go up Hoher Kasten by cable car.

Day Trip Details

At the designated time, we'll set off from the Sihlquai Bus Station parking lot in Zurich towards the northeastern region of Switzerland.

During our bus ride, we'll drive along Lake Zurich and pass next to Rapperswil Castle. The journey will continue to the hills of Appenzell, where we'll visit a traditional farm to try a glass of fresh milk.

Our next stop will be the Appenzeller cheese factory, where we'll see how raw milk is turned into Switzerland's most aromatic cheese and visit its warehouse holding up to 12,500 wheels of cheese. A cheese tasting will be included.

After the cheese factory, we'll take the cable car up Hoher Kasten Mountain, whose summit is 1,794 metres (5,885 feet) above sea level. The top offers views of the Alpstein massif, Rhine Valley, Lake Constance, and the Principality of Liechtenstein, as well as parts of Germany and Austria. There is a revolving restaurant where lunch can be purchased.

Following lunch, we’ll return via cable car to the base and head to the picturesque village of Appenzell for a guided tour, exploring the houses' wooden facades and visiting a chocolate boutique for a chocolate tasting.

After the tour, you'll have half an hour of free time before we begin our return journey to Zurich, concluding the 11-hour trip with goodbyes at the starting point.
