Excursion to Askja Volcano

Our adventure begins at 8 am, with a pick-up from your accommodation in Akureyri as we head toward the inland marvel of Askja volcano.

As we embark on our journey, take in the incredible vistas that the northern region offers. We will navigate through the Lake Myvatn vicinity, making a stop at the Hrossaborg crater. Here, we will traverse the mountain road leading us to Herðubreiðalindir, an enchanting green haven set against a stark volcanic backdrop.

While we explore this unique setting, you will also hear tales of the outlaw Fjalla-Eyvindur and the reasons behind his refuge at Herðubreiðalindir. Afterward, we'll return to our vehicle and continue our journey through the almost lunar landscapes of Iceland, notable for serving as a training ground for NASA astronauts.

Upon reaching the Askja volcano, we will embark on a hike along the scenic paths that trace its craters and lakes. We will pause to admire two prominent features: Askja and Viti, the latter being a smaller lake formed within the crater. This excursion also offers the chance to unwind in a hot springs lagoon, a truly rejuvenating experience!

Before concluding our trip, we will explore the Drekagil canyon, also known as the canyon of dragons, flanked by stunning black rock walls.

Finally, we will make our return to Akureyri, completing our expedition by 8 pm.
