On this guided tour of Al Hoota Cave, we'll explore this natural formation that has existed for millions of years, reflecting the history of the region in north-east Oman.
Tour Description
At the designated time, we will gather at the entrance of Al Hoota Cave to commence our guided exploration of this notable site in Al Hamra.
This natural formation, situated at the base of Jebel Shams, Oman's highest mountain, is approximately 2 million years old, showcasing the influence of natural processes over time. The cave was formed through the dissolution of limestone by acidic water, a phenomenon that continues to shape the underground environment.
The Al Hoota Cave extends over 4.5 kilometres (2.7 miles), but only 500 metres (1,640 feet) are accessible to the public. The tour will navigate through an underground landscape featuring geological formations like stalactites, stalagmites, and columns that have taken millions of years to develop.
Participants will also encounter one of the four lakes in the cave, an expansive body of water measuring 800 metres (2,624 feet) in length and 15 metres (49 feet) deep. Information about the unique fish inhabiting this lake will be provided during the tour, along with potential sightings of bats, arthropods, molluscs, spiders, and water beetles.
After approximately one hour, the tour will conclude as we exit the cave.
