On this guided tour of Al Hoota Cave, we'll explore a natural treasure formed over millions of years, providing insight into the history of this region in the north-east of Oman.
Tour Description
At the designated time, we will meet at the entrance to Al Hoota Cave to commence a guided tour inside this notable site in Al Hamra.
This natural wonder, located at the base of Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in Oman, is over 2 million years old, showcasing the power of nature and time. It was formed by the dissolution of limestone by acidic water, a process that continues to shape the underground landscape.
The cave extends over 4.5 kilometres (2.7 miles), with only 500 metres (1,640 feet) accessible to the public. This short tour features an underground landscape filled with geological formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, and columns that have developed over millions of years.
We will also visit one of the four lakes within the cave, which is 800 metres (2,624 feet) long and 15 metres (49 feet) deep. During the visit, we will discuss an interesting fish that inhabits this lake, as well as potential sightings of bats, arthropods, molluscs, spiders, and water beetles.
After approximately an hour, we will exit the cave and conclude the tour.
