Volcanic Caves Day Trip

Pickup from your hotel will commence at the indicated time to start the journey to the volcanic caves of Terceira in an off-road vehicle or van, surrounded by leafy forests and hydrangea fields.

We will navigate lesser-traveled trails to reach Guilherme Moniz crater, 640 meters high. Here you will see key geological features like Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal. The tour includes exploring these volcanic caves and the diverse Azorian vegetation, including holly, moss, and laurel.

While learning about the caves' formation history, observe the stalactites and cavities, and find a hidden pond inside, enhancing the experience.

The tour also visits Furnas do Enxofre, known for geothermal activity, allowing you to observe fumaroles releasing sulphurous steam. This highlights the volcanic origin of the Azores.

On the return trip, enjoy the scenery of Terceira for four hours before returning to your hotel.

Itinerary Changes

Due to improvement works, Algar do Carvão will be closed from 19 October 2024 to April 2025. The itinerary will be adjusted to visit a hidden lava tube during this period.
