Volcanic Caves Day Trip

Pickup from your hotel occurs at the indicated time, followed by a journey to the volcanic caves of Terceira in either an off-roading vehicle or a van, surrounded by leafy forests and hydrangea fields.

Traveling through less frequented trails, we reach the Guilherme Moniz crater, 640 meters high, where we will explore the Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal. During the tour of these volcanic caves, observe the unique Azorian vegetation thriving inside, including holly, moss, and laurel.

Learn about the history of these formations as you admire the stalactites and surface cavities, and discover a hidden pond inside.

Additionally, we will visit Furnas do Enxofre, known for geothermal activity and fumaroles emitting sulphurous steam. Witness this natural phenomenon reflecting the volcanic origin of the Azores.

On the return trip, enjoy the scenic views of Terceira as we travel on the main roads. After 4 hours of nature immersion, we will return to the hotel.

Itinerary Adjustments

Due to maintenance works, Algar do Carvão is currently closed. The itinerary will be modified to include a visit to a hidden lava tube instead.
