This free tour of Antwerp reveals the secrets of one of Belgium's historic cities, known as the city of giants.
Antwerp Free Tour
The free tour meets in the Grote Markt ("Great Market Square"), the town hall square, marking the start of the journey through Flanders' largest and richest town. This square exemplifies the city's 'golden era' in the sixteenth century, a period of immense wealth and significance, often regarded as "the centre of the entire international economy" of that time.
The tour features iconic monuments, including Het Steen (the medieval fortress crucial to the Antwerp economy), St. Charles Borromeo Church (noted for its decoration by Rubens), and Boerentoren (the "Farmer's Tower," a symbol of modern Antwerp and one of Europe's first skyscrapers).
Participants will also visit the house of Rubens to learn about his connection to the city and explore the Vlaeykensgang, which remains largely intact since the sixteenth century. By the tour's conclusion, you'll gain a sense of belonging in the diamond capital of the world.
