Punta Abona and Abades Sanatorium Hike
At your chosen time, we'll meet next to the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes in Arico, Southern Tenerife.
Our 3.7-mile (6 km) walk will take us through some of the notable coves and pools on the island's southeastern coast. The sound of the Atlantic will accompany us as we hike towards the over 100-year-old Punta Abona Lighthouse.
Tenerife's coastline features seven lighthouses, including Anaga, Punta Rasca, Puerto de la Cruz, and Buenavista. We will share the histories of these structures while enjoying the views. We'll also observe local flora adapted to the arid landscape, including tabaibas, ceropegia, and sea grapes.
The route will lead us to the Abades Sanatorium, an abandoned leper colony constructed during World War II but never used. The ruins of the hospital, school, church, and crematorium remain and evoke a haunting atmosphere.
As night falls, we'll conclude by returning to our starting point 2-3 hours after our departure while appreciating the starry sky.
