Punta Abona and Abades Sanatorium Hike
We will meet at your chosen time next to the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, in the municipality of Arico, Southern Tenerife.
This 3.7-mile (6 km) walk will take us through various coves and pools on the island's southeastern coast, accompanied by the sounds of the Atlantic Ocean as we hike through volcanic landscapes towards the Punta Abona Lighthouse, over 100 years old.
Tenerife's coastline has seven lighthouses including Anaga, Punta Rasca, Puerto de la Cruz, and Buenavista. We will discuss the origins of these structures while taking in the views, and observe local flora adapted to the arid conditions, including tabaibas, ceropegia, and sea grape.
The route will lead us to the Abades Sanatorium, an abandoned leper colony built during WWII but never used. The ruins of the hospital, school, church, and crematorium remain and create a haunting atmosphere.
As night falls, we will conclude our activity by returning to our starting point 2-3 hours after departure, while appreciating the starry sky.
