Matera Excursion

Your journey begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Ascea. As we board the bus to Matera, prepare yourself to delve into one of the most captivating and frequented destinations in southern Italy.

Upon reaching Matera, we step off the bus and commence our walk through the historic center of Matera, one of the world's oldest urban areas. We will have the chance to explore the renowned Sassi di Matera, the ancient quarters intricately carved into the rugged terrain of the Murgia Materana. Remarkably, these areas have been inhabited since the Paleolithic period.

As we traverse the sectors of Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, we’ll uncover some of the most intriguing parts of this World Heritage city and learn about its rich history. We will highlight the origins of these districts along with their growth and development throughout the years.

During our guided exploration, we will visit the Church of Santa Chiara, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, and the Cathedral of Matera, an exemplar of Apulian Romanesque architecture.

After the tour, you'll have the opportunity to savor local delicacies during lunch at your leisure. Additionally, should you wish, you can visit some of Matera's incredible rock churches (entry not included), such as the Church of San Pietro Barisano, the Church of Santa Maria di Idris, and the Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve. Each of these sites is a marvel in its own right!

As the tour concludes, we will return to the bus and journey back to our starting point, wrapping up our excursion approximately twelve hours after we set off.
