Matera Excursion

We'll pick you up at your hotel in Ascea and board a bus to Matera. Upon arrival, we'll explore the historic center of Matera, one of the oldest in the world, including the Sassi di Matera, areas carved into the rocky landscape of the Murgia Materana, inhabited since the Paleolithic era.

We will traverse the districts of Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso to uncover fascinating corners of this World Heritage city and discuss its history, including the evolution and expansion of these districts.

During the guided tour, notable sites will include the Church of Santa Chiara, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, and the Cathedral of Matera, which features Apulian Romanesque architecture.

Participants will have free time to experience local cuisine and lunch independently. Additionally, there will be an option to visit some of Matera's rock churches (not included) such as the Church of San Pietro Barisano, Church of Santa Maria di Idris, and Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve.

The tour concludes with a return bus trip to the starting point, finishing twelve hours after departure.
