On this walking tour of Astorga, we'll explore the city's history, architecture, and Roman heritage.
Tour Details
We will meet at the specified time in front of the Episcopal Palace in the Plaza Eduardo de Castro.
The tour begins with a stroll through the historic center of Astorga, discussing the Maragatería region, its famous mule drivers, and the city's connection to chocolate.
As we walk, we will view two murals by local artist Da2.0. Please take photos along the way.
Next, we will visit Plaza de Santocildes, discussing the Cocido Maragato, a local stew, and then head to the Plaza Mayor to learn about the Baroque façade of the Town Hall. If possible, we will hear the bell chimes of Juan Zancuda and Colasa.
The tour continues along Astorga's ancient walls, passing the Sanctuary of Fátima, the Synagogue Garden, and the Domus del Oso y los Pájaros, a well-preserved Roman ruin. We will also discuss the city's festivals, including the Astures y Romanos re-enactment.
Then, we will enter the Episcopal Palace, designed by Antoni Gaudí, and explore three floors of this building.
Finally, we will conclude the tour inside the Astorga Cathedral, where we will see its chapels, choir, and the main altarpiece by Gaspar Becerra.
