Free Tour of Baeza: A City Shaped by Three Cultures

Our journey starts promptly at the designated meeting point, located at number 8 on Portales Zapatería.

After a brief introduction to Baeza, a distinguished member of the esteemed 15 Spanish World Heritage Sites, we will begin our exploration through its historical heart. Our first landmark will be the picturesque Paseo de la Constitución, a former vibrant market that once bustled with activity.

The next phase of our tour takes us into Baeza's trade history, where we will examine the principal commodities exchanged among its varied cultures. Following this, we will uncover the evolution of its established University as we proceed toward the Santísima Trinidad Secondary School. Inside its walls, we will step into the classroom where Antonio Machado, the celebrated poet, imparted knowledge from 1912 to 1919.

Departing from the educational grounds, we’ll make our way to the lively Plaza de Santa Cruz, where we will appreciate the church dedicated to the same saint alongside the Palacio de Jabalquinto. These monuments hold a unique connection to the three cultures present in Baeza. After uncovering the depth of this connection, we will proceed to the Plaza de Santa María.

As we conclude our tour with this last leg, we will be enchanted by the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady, an exquisite structure built upon the remnants of an ancient mosque. Notably, the current belfry of this Christian structure once functioned as the minaret of a Muslim temple.

We’ll navigate through the narrow streets that encircle the cathedral, rich in Muslim history. Interestingly, you may find these alleys recognizable from films such as Captain Alatriste! Following this, we will make our way to an observation point offering stunning vistas of the olive groves. To cap off this perfect outing, we will enjoy a delightful olive oil tasting at a nearby establishment.

After an engaging 1.5 hours of discovery, we will wrap up this complimentary tour of Baeza at the Plaza del Pópulo, conveniently located close to our initial meeting point.
