Baeza: A City of Three Cultures Free Tour
Our free tour of Baeza begins at Paseo Portales Zapatería. After a brief introduction to Baeza, recognized as one of the 15 Spanish World Heritage Sites, we will explore its historic center, starting with the Paseo de la Constitución, formerly a busy market.
We will discuss the trade in Baeza, examining the main goods exchanged among its cultures, then learn about the origins of the University as we approach the Santísima Trinidad Secondary School, including a visit to the classroom of poet Antonio Machado, who taught here from 1912 to 1919.
Continuing to the Plaza de Santa Cruz, we will see the church and the Palacio de Jabalquinto, both important to Baeza's cultural history. We will then proceed to the Plaza de Santa María.
There, we will admire the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady, built on the site of an ancient mosque, and learn that its bell tower was originally a minaret. We will explore the surrounding alleys rich in Muslim heritage, some featured in the film Captain Alatriste. Following this, we will enjoy views of the olive groves and conclude with an olive oil tasting.
The tour lasts 1.5 hours, ending in the Plaza del Pópulo, close to the starting point.
