Explore an imposing fortress in the province of Jaén on this guided tour of Baños de la Encina Castle. You'll be blown away by one of the oldest fortresses in Spain!
Tour Details
Our tour will begin at Burgalimar Castle: the sturdy fortress of Umayyad origin that dominates a hill in the town of Baños de la Encina, in the province of Jaén.
During the guided tour of Baños de la Encina Castle, which lasts approximately 45 minutes, we'll enter the interior of this incredible slice of history and get a close-up view of its solid walled enclosure. While we observe its solid defensive perimeter we'll learn about the history of this bastion, which in the Andalusian period occupied a strategic location right at the beginning of the Guadalquivir valley. Muslims and Christians fought for control of this area of the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages.
A few kilometres from the castle, in 1212, a key confrontation took place between the two sides: the Battle of Navas de Tolosa.
In addition to contemplating the walled battlements of the fortified complex, we'll also visit the Torre del Homenaje: an additional watchtower built after the Christian reconquest of this territory. We'll end the guided tour by discovering other significant aspects of this amazing fortress.
