The mines around the Castaño River are a main attraction of the Argentine department of Calingasta. This private trip from Barreal offers a chance to explore these landscapes.
Castano River Mines Private Trip
Pickup is at 10 am at your hotel in Barreal in a 4x4 jeep. The journey begins at an old gold mine north of Calingasta, where the mining process will be explained.
The trip continues as we ascend Timbirimbas hill in the 4x4 vehicle, with views of the Andes in the background. We will also cross the Castaño River in the vehicle.
On the other side, we will visit the Castaño Nuevo mines, where gold and silver were discovered in the late 19th century. Though now disused, these mines were active in the 1950s and 1960s, with over 800 houses built for miners and their families. The dike over the Castaño River gorge improved access to the area.
After learning about the province of San Juan's mining history, we will enjoy a picada de campo - a picnic lunch in nature. The return trip to the city allows for more views of the Andes. A short break for a light snack is included. We will arrive back at your hotel in Barreal by 10 pm.
