Day Trip to Pedra do Altar

On this day trip to Pedra do Altar, we'll hike around this archaeological site featuring ancient rock art and visit the natural pools of Paraíba River.

Day Trip Details

We'll pick you up from your hotel in João Pessoa at the designated time and drive to the location for a 1.5-kilometre (0.93 miles) hike. The trail leads to the Paraíba riverbed, which crosses the caatinga, the only biome entirely within Brazil. Along the way, we'll stop at archaeological sites where Tupi Indians settled and left inscriptions in red ink, confirming their presence.

At the end of the trail, we will find Pedra do Altar, an imposing rock near waterfalls and natural ofurôs—small pools along the river. After relaxing, we will return on the same trail to the site's restaurant, where you'll have time for lunch if desired.

After re-energising, we'll return to your hotel in João Pessoa, concluding the trip 12 hours after pickup.
