Traiguera & Cervera del Maestre Guided Tour
The adventure begins at 8:45 am at the Benicassim Tourist Office, where we will board a bus to Traiguera. Our first stop will be an estate featuring olive groves that are centuries old, allowing us to uncover the secrets of how this region's renowned 'liquid gold' is crafted.
As we traverse the orchards, take a moment to behold the impressive Sinfo Olive Tree, one of Europe's oldest living specimens and a recipient of an award for the finest monumental olive tree in 2018. While admiring these ancient trees, we'll gain insights into their cultivation and participate in a delightful olive oil tasting, paired with local cold cuts.
Post-tasting, we'll return to the bus for our onward journey to Cervera del Maestre. Here, we will visit the Oil Mill Visitor Centre, delving into the cultural traditions that surround olive cultivation in this region. Afterward, you will have approximately an hour to explore Cervera del Maestre, famed for its medieval castle. This fortress, of Arab origin, was constructed as a defensive stronghold during the Reconquest period in Spain.
Our final destination will be back in Traiguera at the Royal Sanctuary Virgen Fuente de la Salud. Recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest, this site holds the unique designation of 'Royal' in the Castellón province. Here, we will discuss its rich history dating back to Charles V, while examining the various components of the sanctuary, including the hostelry, living quarters for priests, kitchens, and the chapel.
The excursion will conclude between 2:15 pm and 2:45 pm, returning to our initial meeting point.
