On this tour of Berat, we'll discover the castle and the oldest quarters of the city while uncovering its history and cultural blend.
Tour Details
We will meet at Saint Demetrius Orthodox Cathedral at the scheduled time, and once everyone arrives, we will commence this guided tour of Berat, also known as the 'city of a thousand windows'. This nickname derives from the white-fronted houses on the hill where the town is situated.
After an introduction, we will drive to Berat Castle, located 200 metres (656 ft) above sea level. This structure was once the ancient city of Berat and is now a walled quarter.
It is one of the largest inhabited fortresses in the Balkans, with over 500 residents in its 120 medieval houses. We will walk through its streets, entering key points such as St. Mary of Blachernae Church, St. Nicholas Church, the Acropolis , and the White and Red Mosques. A stop at the castle's viewpoint will provide scenic views.
After our exploration, we will return to the vehicle to visit the other two districts of Berat, the Gorica district and the Mangalem district. In Gorica, we will cross the Gorica Bridge and observe its typical houses.
Next, we will continue to Mangalem via the suspension bridge. This quarter features steep cobbled streets and vertical houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, symbolizing Berat. We will explore the medieval quarter, which contains the Helveti Tekke and the King Mosque to learn about the city's Muslim heritage.
The tour will conclude after 3 to 3.5 hours of activity, returning to the starting point via Republika Boulevard.
