Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Tour
- 6 Stunden
An unmissable sight in Berlin that presents the realities of the Nazi regime in a powerful experience.
Description
The tour meets at Brandenburg Gate and proceeds to Sachsenhausen concentration camp, built in 1936 as one of the first camps under the Nazi regime and a model for others. Participants will learn about the atrocities from its construction until its closure in 1950.
Sachsenhausen served both the Nazi regime and the Soviet NKVD, with 30,000 prisoners dying there. It influenced the design of later extermination and concentration camps where severe crimes against humanity were committed.
Visiting the camp alone is possible, but a guide is essential for understanding the historical context and significance of the locations. For instance, the central courtyard appears unremarkable, yet it was where prisoners were forced to march up to 90 km per day in military boots, and subjected to the effects of D-IX, a methamphetamine-based performance enhancer. The guide provides insights into the camp's history and the horrors that occurred.
Participants will also visit the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum, dedicated to commemorating the events that transpired there. The tour concludes with a return to Berlin at approximately 4:45 pm.
