Tour of the Jewish Quarter of Besalú
At your chosen time, we'll meet in front of the iconic Romanesque bridge over the river Fluvià to commence our tour of Besalú.
On the opposite bank lies the medieval historic center of this village. We'll visit notable sites, with a focus on the Call, the old Jewish quarter, featuring narrow and picturesque streets that provide a glimpse into the past.
Despite the expulsion of the Jewish population in 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs, the legacy remains. We'll explore one of the four remaining miqves in Europe, where we will learn about the ritual purification process in the Jewish bath hall.
During the tour of the Call, we will discuss the customs, traditions, culture, and cuisine of the Besalú Jewish community and the history of significant local monuments, including the 11th-century monastery of San Pedro, established by Count Bernardo I of Besalú.
After two hours of exploration, our tour will conclude in the historic center of Besalú.
