Tour of the Jewish Quarter of Besalú
At your chosen time, we will meet in front of the iconic Romanesque bridge spanning the river Fluvià and begin the tour of Besalú.
On the opposite bank lies the medieval historic center of one of the most beautiful villages of Girona. We will explore significant locations in the town, notably the Call, the old Jewish quarter, characterized by its narrow and picturesque streets that evoke centuries past.
In 1492, the Catholic Monarchs expelled the Jewish population from the kingdoms. However, visitors can learn about their legacy through one of the four remaining miqves in Europe. In this ancient structure, which hosted the Jewish bath hall, we will discuss the ritual purification process.
While touring the Call, we will examine the customs, traditions, culture, and cuisine of the Besalú Jewish community. Additionally, we will uncover the history of other key monuments, including the monastery of San Pedro, established in the 11th century by Count Bernardo I of Besalú.
After two hours of exploring Besalú, the tour will conclude in the historic center of the town.
