Spend a day exploring a fascinating Peruvian archaeological site on our Cumbemayo Day Trip. We'll leave Cajamarca behind and venture to its mysterious stone forests and aqueducts.
Cumbemayo Day Trip
Having picked you up from your hotel at 9:30 am, we'll set off for Cumbemayo. This archaeological site features a forest of large stone monoliths known as frailones, constructed around 1000 BC, making it over 3,000 years old.
We'll begin with a visit to the Cumbemayo Aqueduct, a significant hydraulic engineering work from the pre-Columbian period, where water continues to flow along its 6-mile (9-kilometre) stretch. We will discuss the purpose of the aqueduct, which remains a mystery.
Despite the Cajamarca region having sufficient water, an aqueduct was an unnecessary addition. Historians believe its purpose may be linked to the sanctuary, a rock shaped like a human head where human sacrifices were performed. We will also explore caves near the sanctuary with engraved rocks, whose meanings are also unknown.
On our way back to your hotel, we will stop at the Bellavista viewpoint for views of the Cajamarca Valley.
We will arrive back at your hotel at 1 pm.
