If you are eager to uncover the hidden gem of Machu Picchu in Peru, this journey to the archaeological site of Marcahuamachuco from Cajamarca is an experience not to be missed. These ancient ruins await you at a remarkable altitude exceeding 3,000 meters (9,842 feet)!
Marcahuamachuco Exploration
At the scheduled hour, you'll be collected from your accommodation in Cajamarca. Following a scenic drive of approximately three hours, we'll reach Cajabamba, where you'll have some free time to enjoy breakfast. Our next destination will be the Marcahuamachuco archaeological site.
Marcahuamachuco is often referred to as the Machu Picchu of the north. Perched on a mountain plateau at about 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) above sea level, it stands even higher than the renowned Machu Picchu, which is located at 2,430 meters (7,972 feet).
Construction of this monumental site began around 500 BC, playing a vital role in the northern region of Peru during pre-Incan civilizations, likely serving as a key commercial hub. Our exploration will commence at the three hills comprising the site. First, we will visit the Cerro del Castillo, where an impressive fortress surrounded by numerous galleries can be admired.
After concluding our tour, you'll have the opportunity to relax and enjoy lunch at a local eatery nearby before heading back to the original meeting point, where we will bid farewell after an enriching day of discovery lasting a total of 16 hours.
