Description

Itinerary
Your adventure will begin with a pick-up from your hotel in Calama, setting the stage for our journey to the intriguing Chacabuco ghost town. Prepare to discover the untold stories hidden within its walls!
On our way to Chacabuco, we will make a short stop at Pique Chela, a spa established for local families in the Atacama Desert around the late 19th century. It’s interesting to note that this area was once regarded as part of Bolivia.
Continuing our route, we will arrive around noon at Pampa Union town, a settlement founded in 1911 primarily focused on salt mining. This establishment was a significant community formed alongside a sanatorium designed to care for salt mine workers who needed medical attention.
Next, we will make our way to the ghost town of Chacabuco. Here, we’ll wander through its desolate streets while learning about its past. Chacabuco began as a salt mining hub, later expanding into saltpeter extraction, with the Chacabuco Saltpeter Office being one of the largest institutions in the region.
This once-thriving community boasted a population of up to 5,000 residents. The town flourished with various amenities, including a theater, hotel, school, market, gym, and even football fields, catering to the vibrant lives of its inhabitants.
After immersing ourselves in the eerie charm of Chacabuco, we will conclude our tour and return you comfortably to your hotel in Calama, approximately 8 hours after our departure.
