Paestum Archeological Park Private Tour
At the designated time, we'll meet at the Archaeological Park of Paestum to begin a tour of this important site in southern Italy, known as Magna Grecia in the Classical Age.
The guided tour will start with a discussion on its Greek origins and subsequent Roman conquest, including the impact of the overflowing of the Salso River that led to the city's abandonment.
We will first visit the temple of Hera, the oldest structure on the site dating back to the 6th century BC. Nearby is the temple of Poseidon, the largest temple of Paestum, which gives the archaeological park its name. Following the Doric colonnades, we will move on to the sanctuary of Athena, notable for the Christian tombs found there, as it later served as a church.
The tour will then proceed along the Via Sacra to the forum and the Roman amphitheater of Paestum. Lastly, we will visit the National Archaeological Museum to see original artifacts from the site, including the notable Tomb of the Swimmer.
The guided tour will last two hours, after which you can continue exploring the site at your leisure.
