Cartagena de Indias African Culture
We will meet at the Camellón de los Mártires (Plaza of Peace) to start our tour of Cartagena de Indias, focusing on the legacy of African culture in the city.
Our first stop will be at the Plaza de la Proclamación, where we will learn how African communities in Cartagena developed their own culture. We will continue through the old town, visiting sites such as the Portal de las Reinas and the Plaza de la Marina, where we will discuss the history of illustrious Afro-Caribbean figures.
Next, we will visit San Pedro Claver Square and Customs House Square to understand the differences between salsa and champeta dances. This will be followed by a workshop on African turbans, where participants can create their own piece as a souvenir.
After the workshop, we will visit a lively location to sample typical Afro-Caribbean sweets with coconut water. We will then attend a dance class to learn the steps of the champeta.
This three-hour tour will conclude in the historic center of the city.
