The museum showcases various historical structures integrated into its design, including the Riquelme Palace and the Church of Santa Maria from the medieval era. Your visit commences at the historic Pascual Riquelme Palace, where you'll gain insight into the theater's discovery and excavation through an underground passage. This corridor leads you to a chamber featuring notable artifacts uncovered during the digs, including jewelry, statues, vessels, and artistic masterpieces such as the three altars dedicated to the Capitoline Triad.
Continuing your journey, you'll traverse the tunnel beneath the medieval church, culminating with the impressive sight of the Roman Theatre of Cartagena, one of Spain's largest theaters. Here, you can view the remnants of its stage front, the orchestra area, reserved for prominent citizens and leaders, and the cavea, where the populace of Carthago Nova gathered according to their social standings.
This theater, which accommodated approximately 7,000 spectators, remained in use until the 2nd century. Thanks to archaeological investigations conducted in the 1990s and the innovative design by architect Rafael Moneo, you can now appreciate this remarkable tour showcasing Cartagena's illustrious past.
Operating Hours
The Roman Theatre Museum operates during the following hours:
From May 1 to September 30 and during Easter: Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm. Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm.From October 1 to April 30: Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm.Note that on December 24th and 31st and January 5th, the museum is open only from 10 am to 2 pm.
Last entry is permitted one hour before the closing time.
Bear in mind that operating hours can change and might vary slightly. Additionally, be prepared to wait in line for museum entry.
