San Felipe Castle Tour
- 3 Stunden
On this guided tour of the castle San Felipe de Barajas, we'll explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Description
We'll meet at the Camellón de los Mártires at the indicated time and head towards the San Felipe de Barajas castle. This massive fort, built during the 16th and 17th centuries by Spanish military and African slaves, was designed to defend against attacks from French pirate Pointis and English officer Edward Vernon. We will learn about Blas de Lezo and other historical figures.
Participants will walk along the fortress walls, viewing the cannons that remain from the original 63 that defended Cartagena de Indias, as well as the galleries, guardhouses, reservoirs, and tunnels used for protection, capable of holding 300 people.
The tour includes discussions about the secrets of its construction, including the use of human and animal blood.
After visiting the castle, we will take a minibus to Cerro de la Popa, the highest point in Cartagena, rich in myths and legends, where we will visit the convent. From the panoramic viewpoint, we will enjoy views of the Caribbean Sea, Tierra Bomba island, and Cartagena's bays.
We will conclude the tour with a tasting of traditional Colombian sweets and coffee. The total duration of the tour is three hours.
