Tour Details
We will meet in front of the Basilica della Collegiata on Via Etnea. This free tour explores a city affected by volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and war. The tour begins with the origins of Catania, featuring the Roman amphitheatre, a 2nd-century structure made of basaltic stone from Mount Etna. We will discuss the founding of the Greek town of Katane and its history until the fall of the Roman Empire.
We will also explore the life of composer Vincenzo Bellini and the legend of Saint Agatha, the city's patron saint. The tour includes a visit to Via Crociferi, notable for its 18th-century buildings and churches like San Giuliano and San Camillo, highlighting the characteristics of Sicilian Baroque. Catania is recognized as a World Heritage Site and is part of the late baroque cities of Val di Noto.
After 2 hours, we will conclude the free tour of Catania at the meeting point.
