Tour Details
We'll meet at Piazza dell'Università to begin our guided tour of Catania. The tour will cover the city's origins and significant natural events like the lava flow in 1669 and the earthquake in 1693.
Next, we'll walk to Piazza del Duomo and the Elephant Fountain. You will learn about the legends surrounding Catania's famous elephant, Liotru. The tour will also include visits to the Catania Cathedral and the Town Hall courtyard, which commemorate Agatha of Sicily, the town's patron saint. After crossing the Fontana dell'Amenano, you'll explore the lively fish market.
We will then proceed to the tranquil Via dei Crociferi, a striking example of the Baroque in Catania, reflecting ties to the pre-earthquake city. Our return to Piazza dell'Università will showcase majestic Baroque buildings, leading us to the Roman Amphitheatre of Catania, a significant medieval structure made of unique black volcanic stone.
