Are you ready to explore the hidden depths of Catania? Join us on this tour as we delve beneath the city to uncover secret churches, ancient tunnels, and enigmatic corridors.
Tour Overview
Our journey begins at Piazza Stesicoro, where we will gather at the scheduled time to commence our exploration of underground Catania. Throughout this informative tour, we will meander through the city and uncover three key historical sites that lie beneath the surface.
The first site on our itinerary is the Roman Amphitheatre. This significant structure is partly visible above ground but is an integral element of our underground adventure in the historic center. This ancient site, dating back to the 2nd century AD, is situated within the Greco-Roman archaeological park of Catania and is an essential point of interest.
Next, we will visit the Sant'Eupilo Crypt, which originally served as a Roman tomb from the imperial period and is now located beneath the remnants of a church that was damaged during World War II. Here, we will learn about the martyr from whom the crypt derives its name, one of the earliest saints in early Christian Catania.
Our journey continues to the San Giuliano Crypt, found beneath a church of the same name. This stop will reveal intriguing insights into the crypt's historical significance and its role in the past.
To conclude our tour, we will make a stop at a nearby kiosk to enjoy some refreshments and light snacks. Finally, our exploration will wrap up at Piazza Università, where we will part ways after a captivating 2.5-hour experience.
Important Information
If any of the aforementioned sites are not accessible on the day of the tour, we will adjust the itinerary to include alternative underground locations of equivalent historical value.
