Join us on this day trip to Xunantunich and explore the remains of the Mayan civilization.
Description
We will pick you up from your hotel in San Ignacio at 8 am. A 15-minute drive will take us to Xunantunich, an ancient Mayan city that translates to “Stone Woman”. After that, we will take a ferry for about 15 minutes along the river, where you might see iguanas and bats.
The crossing to Xunantunich involves a hand-cranked ferry across the Mopán River. Following this, we will drive 1 mile to begin our exploration.
During the tour, our guide will share insights on Mayan Archeology, leading us through the understory to the monumental structure of “El Castillo”, which stands approximately 130 feet tall (39 metres) and is the second tallest man-made structure in Belize. You will have the opportunity to climb to the top for a 360-degree view.
We’ll also visit the Central Plaza, the Ancient Mayan Ball Court used for Pok-A-Tok, residential areas, and the Astronomical Observatory, which was crucial for agricultural planning.
At the end of the tour, we will return to San Ignacio and drop you off at the office or your hotel. Arrival is expected between 12:30 pm and 1 pm.
