Discover two of the most famous places in central Peru's Oxapampa region on our day trip to Villa Rica and El Oconal Lagoon. You'll visit a place that's millions of years old and incredibly biodiverse.
Villa Rica & El Oconal Lagoon Day Trip
At 8 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in La Merced and start exploring some of the amazing places in the province of Oxapampa.
This area has been inhabited by three different civilizations: the Campas to the east, the Amueshas to the west, and the Cashibos to the northeast. These cultures were Amazonian tribes that lived in harmony. The region is characterized by its beautiful waterfalls and its coffee, pineapple, and rocoto crops.
Our first stop will be the village of Villa Rica, where we will discuss the municipality's role as a coffee producer. You will see the Chapel of Our Lady of Rosario, built entirely of wood, and the Plaza de Armas in the town's heart.
You will then have some free time to eat lunch before we head to the El Oconal Lagoon. This wetland area is home to fish such as catfish and tilapia, and white herons. The lagoon was formed by fluvial deposits during the Cenozoic period some 50 million years ago.
We will return to La Merced and drop you off at your hotel after an unforgettable 9-hour day trip.
