Tlacolula, San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya & Yagul Day Trip
Your adventure begins at 10 am when we greet you at your accommodation in Oaxaca and commence our excursion at the San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya former convent.
Upon our arrival, you will have the opportunity to wander through this ecclesiastical complex established by the Dominicans in 1558. Here, we will appreciate the magnificent 17th-century polychrome altarpiece and the region's exclusive bellows organ. Notably, these rooms were once inhabited by the renowned writer, friar, and military figure Juan de Córdova, known for his works on Zapotec language and culture.
Next, we will visit the impressive Municipal Presidency of San Jeronimo Tlacochahuaya Palace. This grand structure showcases remarkable architectural elements, including its portico and the decorative arches that grace its façade.
Our journey then takes us to the Yagul archaeological site. Here, you will encounter ancient mural paintings within various tombs, remnants of a significant ceremonial center, the largest ball game court in Oaxaca, and a fortification on the hillside that is believed to have origins dating back to 500 BC.
To conclude our day, we will visit the lively Tlacolula de Matamoros market, where you can interact with local Oaxacan vendors. Discover the traditions and offerings of the market, watch the bartering process unfold between buyers and sellers, and hear the Zapotec language being spoken around you. Don’t miss the chance to sample local sorbet or savor the famous grilled meats.
We will then return to your hotel in Oaxaca, expected to arrive by 2:30 pm.
