Description
At the agreed time, we'll meet at the Agência Banco de Portugal in Largo da Portagem to start this 2-hour and 45-minute free tour of Coimbra.
First, we'll head to the Praça do Comércio, which is home to two historic churches: the Churches of St. Bartholomew and St. James.
We'll then explore the narrow streets of Coimbra's center and pass by the Monastery of Santa Cruz, a national pantheon with a significant theological legacy. This monastery was notable for its past as a school for an esteemed saint in Christianity.
Next, we'll arrive at Quebras Costas, a square known for the soulful sounds of Coimbra's Fado during festivals, along with two notable monuments.
The tour continues to Torre do Anto, which offers views of the city's left side, and we will see the Sé-Velha, the only Romanesque-style cathedral in Portugal from the Christian Reconquista period.
Finally, we'll visit the University of Coimbra, founded in 1290, recognized as one of Europe's oldest universities, and conclude at the botanical garden of the University of Coimbra, the second oldest in Portugal.
