On this day trip we'll discover the beauty of the Serra da Estrela mountain range, one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Portugal.

Tour Description

At the indicated time, we'll meet at Avenida Emídio Navarro in Coímbra to start this day trip through the Serra da Estrela.

Our first stop will be Sabugueiro, an hour and a half from Coimbra, recognized as the highest village in Portugal at 1200 metres (3,937 ft) above sea level.

During our visit, we will discuss the Estrela Mountain Dog, one of the oldest Portuguese shepherd dog breeds in the Iberian Peninsula. Afterwards, we will continue to the highest point of the Portuguese mainland.

On the way, we will pass by notable sites including Mondeguinho, the source of the largest river in the country, the town of Manteigas, the “heart of the Serra da Estrela” and the headquarters of the UNESCO Estrela Geopark, Zêzere Glacier Valley, and Covão da Ametade.

Upon reaching the top, we will find the Tower, a monument at 1993 metres (6,538 ft) with impressive views of the Serra da Estrela. Participants will have the opportunity to taste some Queijo da Serra, a typical cheese from the region.

We will then begin our descent through the Ski Station, passing by Lagoa Comprida and Senhora do Desterro. The tour concludes with a total of 9 hours of hiking back at the starting point.
