With your ticket to the Monastery of Yuste, you'll discover why Emperor Charles V chose the north of Cáceres to spend his final days.
Why Visit the Monastery of Yuste?
In 1556, Emperor Charles V abdicated in Brussels, passing the Holy Roman Empire to his brother Ferdinand and the Hispanic kingdoms to his son Philip II. Following this, he retired to a small Hieronymite monastery in La Vera, a quiet region in Extremadura. The ticket allows you to explore the site where Charles V spent his last two years. His legacy is evident in the Royal Room, featuring the black curtains he mandated in mourning for his wife, Isabella of Portugal.
The monastery’s Gothic and Renaissance cloisters are notable; the Gothic dates back to the 15th century and the Renaissance includes diverse decorative elements. These areas were where the emperor reflected on his reign's successes and failures. Additionally, the gardens have a pond where Charles V fished, and the monastery church holds significance as he orchestrated a rehearsal of his own burial.
