On this hike up Mount Tlaloc, we will visit the highest archaeological site in Mesoamerica.
Hiking up Mount Tlaloc
We will meet at the corner of Av. Vicente Suarez and Av. Michoacán. From there, we will travel by minibus through the towns of Texoco and San Pablo Ixayoc to reach the Tlaloc hiking route's starting point. The hike begins in a pine forest.
During the hike, we will discuss the local flora and fauna. We will cross a canyon and ascend to the summit of Mount Tlaloc, which stands at an altitude of 13,517 feet (4,120 meters). At the summit, we will also visit the highest archaeological site in Mesoamerica.
This site was considered sacred by the Aztecs. We will explore the area while discussing its significance, including its relation to the Aztec raingod Tlaloc and a notable astronomical phenomenon that occurs each February.
From the top, we'll take a break to enjoy views of the volcanoes Iztaccihuatl and La Malinche, and possibly the Pico de Orizaba if the weather is favorable. After our break, we will begin the descent.
Before returning to Mexico City, we will have a picnic lunch that includes a sandwich, fruit, peanuts, chocolate, water, and a cereal bar. After 2 hours of descent, we will board the minibus for the return trip to Mexico City, arriving after approximately 14.5 hours.
