On this beautiful hike up Mount Tlaloc, we'll reach the highest point of the Sierra de Río Frío and visit the highest archaeological site in Mesoamerica!
Hiking up Mount Tlaloc
We will meet at the corner of Av. Vicente Suarez and Av. Michoacán to begin our hike through the Sierra de Río Frío. We will travel via minibus through Texoco and San Pablo Ixayoc to the hiking route entry point. The hike will begin as we walk uphill through a pine forest.
During the hike, we will discuss the local flora and fauna and will cross a canyon to reach the summit of Mount Tlaloc at an altitude of 13,517 feet (4,120 meters). Here, we will visit the highest archaeological site in Mesoamerica.
This area is considered sacred by the Aztecs. We will explore the archaeological site and discuss its relevance to the Aztec raingod Tlaloc and the astronomical phenomenon that occurs every February.
At the summit, we will take a break to enjoy views of the volcanoes Iztaccihuatl and La Malinche, and possibly Pico de Orizaba if weather permits. After the break, we will proceed down to the starting point.
Before returning to Mexico City, we will enjoy a picnic lunch including a sandwich, fruit, peanuts, chocolate, water, and a cereal bar. After a 2-hour descent, we will return by minibus to Mexico City, arriving after approximately 14.5 hours.
