This hiking adventure departs from Malalcahuello, leading participants to the breathtaking Laguna Espejo, nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada glacier. Prepare to immerse yourself in the stunning vistas of the La Araucanía region in Chile!
Hiking to Laguna Espejo
Your journey will commence at 7:30 am from Kilometer 0 of the Lonquimay Volcano Crossing. Are you ready to explore the captivating beauty of La Araucanía?
The total hiking distance spans 22 kilometers (13.7 miles), with the path categorized as medium difficulty. This route offers varied terrain, ascending from 1,720 to 2,554 meters (5,643 to 8,379 feet) in elevation. Along the way, several breaks will be taken, allowing us to appreciate the magnificent Chilean scenery.
Initially, we will traverse a forested habitat, where native flora like araucarias and ñirres thrive. Once we move beyond the woodlands, our trek will lead us to the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada glacier, home to the well-known Laguna Espejo, aptly named 'Mirror Lake.'
As we relish the spectacular reflection of the mountains on the water, participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a snack consisting of an energy bar, some candy, and an isotonic beverage. If the views thus far have captivated you, you’ll be in awe of the cascading waterfalls that flow into the lagoon, particularly the remarkable Salto Punta Negra waterfall.
Following our time at Laguna Espejo, we will retrace our steps back to the starting point, expected to arrive around 4:30 pm.
