In this orangutan-watching activity in Gunung Leuser, we will stay in wooden huts and explore the lifestyle of these primates. You can choose between a 3 or 4-day tour.

3 or 4-day Orangutan Watching in Gunung Leuser

Day 1

You will be picked up at Medan airport or your hotel to travel to Gunung Leuser National Park, near the village of Batu Rongring. After arriving at lunchtime, visit the Sumatra Dream Class environmental conservation project to learn about their initiatives. Dinner will be served in a local house, and you will stay overnight in Batu Rongring.

Day 2

After an early breakfast, you will trek through the Gunung Leuser jungle to observe orangutans in their natural habitat, guided by an expert. You will also plant trees to aid reforestation. Dinner will be at a local family home where you will experience Karonese cuisine. You will rest overnight in the huts.

Day 3

On the third day, enjoy breakfast and explore more of Gunung Leuser National Park. You will have the rest of the day at your leisure. The tour concludes with a return to Medan airport or your hotel.

4-Day Tour

The 4-day tour allows for an additional day enjoying the experience, with 2 days dedicated to trekking and camping in a tent inside the national park.

Accommodation and Meals

The tour includes 2 nights in wooden cabins and, for the 4-day tour, 1 night camping. You can choose between a private or shared bathroom at the time of booking. Meals are included, but drinks are not. Note that phone signal, wifi, and electricity are limited.

Orangutan Sighting

Sightings of orangutans depend on weather and breeding seasons, and are only in the National Park during guided treks. Other wildlife may include macaque monkeys, Thomas monkeys, monitor lizards, and various birds. A minimum fitness level is required for trekking.
