Discover the area where Mexican Revolutionary General Pancho Villa spent his early years on our San Juan del Río Day Trip. You will explore a historic site and learn important facts about this period of Mexican history.

San Juan del Río Day Trip

We will pick you up from your hotel in Durango and depart for San Juan del Río. At the halfway point, we'll stop at the Peña del Águila dam to admire the surroundings of the La Sauceda River.

Upon arrival in San Juan del Río, we will tour notable churches, including the San Francisco de Asís Church from the 16th century, the sanctuary of Guadalupe, and the San Miguel Arcángel Temple with its baroque altarpiece. We will also view the 'Potro de Hierro' mural honoring Pancho Villa, a leader of the Mexican Revolution born in this area.

Next, we will visit the Community Museum to learn about the customs of San Juan del Río. We will also go to the outskirts to see La Coyotada, Villa's birthplace, while discussing how he became the governor of Chihuahua.

Afterward, we will head to the Willow Well hot springs for lunch and to bathe in the warm pools. Then, we will proceed to the Santiaguillo Lagoon, a protected wetland where thousands of birds from Alaska and Canada nest.

Finally, we will visit a Mennonite community to learn about their pacifist lifestyle and German origins. We will then return to your hotel in Durango, with an estimated arrival time of 8 hours later.
